KNOW: How the municipality of Madalag got its name?

The name of the town Madalag was taken from the name of the brook, called “Madaeag” or “Maearag”, which traverses the Western part of the original Poblacion proper. This brook derives its name from the word madaeag of the local dialect, which means “dark yellowish”. Madaeag or dark yellowish was the color of the substance appearing on the banks of the brook at the time; hence it was called Madaeag.

Another version tells that during the early part of the Spanish regime, a squad of guardia civil or Spanish constables arrived in this settlement. The squad leader ordered one of his soldiers to inquire from the natives about the name of the place. The soldier approached one of the natives by the bank, of the brook and, talking in Spanish, asked for the name of the place. Thinking that he was being asked about the brook, the native replied, “madaeag”. Thinking also that the word uttered by the natives was the name of the place, the soldier in turn informed the squad leader and shouted: “Madalag!”. Since then the place was called “Madalag” by the Spaniards and this became the name of this town.

According to traditions of Madalag, however, the name of this town was derived from the word daeag which is the local dialect refers to the dark yellowish old leaves fallen from the trees of the forest. That was during the regime of the barangays long before the coming of the Spaniards. In those days the site of the settlement was thickly forested along the banks of brook. In summer time the daeag or the dark yellowish old fallen leaves of the trees litered the banks and satured the bed of the brook; hence the brook was called “madaeag” meaning “with plenty of daeag”. This term “madaeag” gradually became the name of the brook eventually, the setllement about it was likewise named “Madaeag”. During the Spanish regime, the name was adopted when this settlement was created a barrio of Banga. Since the Spaniards could not pronounce the letters combination of “ea” or “eag” in the last syllable of the original name madaeag.

KALIBO, AKLAN - Isang retiradong pulis ang nagsauli ng malaking halaga ng pera sa pamamagitan ng Energy FM Kalibo Martes ng umaga.

Siya si SP02 Harold Maribojo  (retired police) ng Brgy Andagao, Kalibo. Nakita raw nito ang pouch sa labas ng Land Bank sa parking area at nakapatong ito sa motor na kanyang pagmamay-ari.

Kaya agad nitong isinauli dito sa himpilan.

Nang suriin walang anumang identication card na nakalagay sa pouch maliban sa pera na nagkakahalaga ng Php17,020 at resibo ng transaksiyon sa ATM ng nabanggit na bangko.

Ayon kay Maribojo first time niyang makaesperyensya nito.

Agad nakipag-ugnayan ang Energy FM Kalibo sa opisina ng bangko para matukoy ang may-ari ng pera kung saan ipinakita ng news team ang resibo para kanilang masuri.

Matapos ang verification process ng Land Bank Kalibo, nakilala ang may-ari na si Mario Rey Iquiña, Election Officer II ng Malinao, Aklan.

Pinuri, pinasalamatan, at hinangaan ni Mr. Iquiña ang katapatang ipinakita ni Retired SP02 Maribojo.##

Security guard faces charges for possession of illegal firearm and violating VAWC law

A security guard named Querobin Melquezedec from Lamitan, Basilan was arrested for possessing illegal fire arm and for violating the VAWC law filed by his live-in partner. The arrest took place at around 9:20PM of July 26, 2019 in their dwelling at Brgy Manocmanoc, Boracay Island.

According to the investigator, Melquezedec inflicted physical harm to his live-in partner which served as his initial violation. When the responding officers arrested him, they were able to recover and confiscate from the actual possession, custody and control of the suspect a .38 Caliber with serial number but without make/brand and 4 live ammunition of .38 Caliber placed inside a blue back pack.

An inquest cases for violating R.A. 10591 (The Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition) and R.A. 9262 (Violation of Against Women and their Children) were filed against Melquezedec. The suspect failed to post bail amounting to Php200,000.00 for R.A.10951 and Php6,000.00 for R.A.9262 for his temporary liberty. (PSMS Christopher D Mendoza, PCR PNCO)

Police arrests tour guide for possessing illegal drugs

The joint operatives of Malay MPS Drug Enforcement Team, 2nd Aklan PMFC and PDEA-Aklan arrested Mark Jude Miñez, 25 in Sitio Tulubhan, Brgy Manocmanoc, Boracay Island at around 9:00PM of July 23, 2019.

According to the investigator on case, the suspect worked as arranger/Assistant Tour Guide and a resident of Brgy Manocmanoc.

Seized from the possession, custody and control of the suspect were five pieces of sealed plastic sachet containing dried leaves, stem and seeds of suspected Marijuana; Php1,200.00 buy-bust money and cash while two pieces of sealed plastic sachet containing dried leaves, stem and seeds of suspected Marijuana in exchanged of the buy-bust money were recovered from a police operative who acted as poseur/buyer.

Naglabas ng pahayag ngayong araw ng Miyerkules ang pamahalaang lokal ng Kalibo kaugnay sa isyu ng "open burning" o pagsisiga pangotra sa lamok.

Sa press statement, binigyang-diin ang mga batas na nagbabawal sa pagsisiga ng mga basura kabilang na ang mga dahon. Binanggit rito ang masamang epekto ng pagsisiga lalo na sa kalusugan.

Nagpaalala ang munisipyo na ang sinomang lalabag sa mga batas na ito ay maaaring pagmultahin at makulong.

PSA conducts surveys on water, sanitation access

A hired Statistical Researcher of PSA-Aklaninspects the handwashing facility of one of the sample households during the conduct of survey in Brgy. Singay, Madalag.

The Philippine Statistics Authority Aklan is currently conducting survey to selected households concerning access on safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices.

The activity, which is part of the poverty indicator survey, aims to collect information to be used in reporting the Sustainable Development Goals Indicator 6--- achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water, and access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all Filipinos.

According to Engr. Antonet Catubuan, Chief Statistical Specialist, a total of 370 households in Aklan were chosen as samples for this survey distributed in 25 barangays.

Questions being ask from the respondents include, among others, main source of water supply, source of drinking water, methods used in water treatment, type of toilet facility, and the presence of handwashing facility in the household.

Nationwide results of similar survey conducted last 2017 showed that 27 percent of families use “safely-managed” drinking water services, which means that the drinking water is from the improved water source located on premises, available when needed and free from fecal contamination.

Likewise, almost one in every three families (34%) has their drinking water at the point use that is free from fecal contamination or zero E.coli.

Point use refers to the water samples collected from a glass of water that the families actually drink.
When it comes to toilet facility, around 74 percent of the Filipino families have at least “basic” sanitation services (improved sanitation facility which is not shared with other households), while 15 percent have “limited” sanitation services (improved sanitation facility but shared facilities).

Improved sanitation pertains to facilities that ensure hygienic separation of human excreta from human contact.

On the other hand, around 6 percent of families practice open defecation.

Meanwhile, 8 out of 10 Filipino families have a “basic” service level of handwashing facility, which means that there is an availability of soap and water, while 6 percent have “limited” service level, or with handwashing place but without soap and/or water.

On the contrary, 14 percent of the families have no handwashing facility at all.

PSA appeals to all sample households in this survey tocooperate in data gathering to produce quality and reliable statistics, which is reflective of the present condition.

ARESTADO ANG isang 20-anyos na lalaki sa Makato, Aklan matapos mahulihan na nagdadala ng baril at mga bala ng walang kaukulang dokumento.

Kinilala ang suspek na si Alfred Kim Magallanes y Almanon, ng Roxas City, Capiz.

Nabatid na nagpapatrolya ang ilang tauhan ng Makato Municipal Police Station dakong 10:40 kagabi sa Brgy. Poblacion para magpatupad ng curfew nang mahuli nila ang suspek.

Napansin umano ng kapulisan ang tatlong lalaki na nakatambay sa waiting shed na dali-daling sumakay sa isang motorsiklo.

DENGUE ALERT: Sanggol sa Buruanga, Aklan namatay dahil sa dengue

 

KALIBO, AKLAN - Isang sanggol sa Brgy. Alegria, Buruanga, Aklan ang namatay sa sakit na dengue habang ginagamot sa isang ospital sa Roxas City, Capiz.

Sinasabi na ito ang kauna-unahang insidente ng may namatay sa sakit na dengue sa bayan ng Buruanga.

70% disaster preventive fund pwede nang magamit dahil sa 'Dengue Outbreak' sa Aklan

PWEDE NANG magamit nang gobyerno probinsiyal ang 70 porsyento ng disasters preventive fund kasunod ng deklarasyon ni Gov. Florencio Miraflores ng Dengue Outbreak sa Aklan.

Ang deklarasyon ay ginawa ng gobernador nitong Lunes sa pagpulong ng Provincial Anti-Dengue Task Force. Isang Executive Order ang nakatakdang lagdaan ng gobernador kaugnay rito.

Sa panayam ng Energy FM Kalibo kay Dr. Cornelio Cuachon ng Provincial Health Office (PHO)-Aklan, kabilang sa posibleng pagamitan ng pondo ay ang pagbili ng mga karagdagang dengue testing kit at mga gamot.

Mababatid sa tala ng PHO-Aklan na umabot na sa 2,171 ang kaso ng dengue sa buong lalawigan sa taong ito, mataas ng 156 porsyento kumpara sa parehong peryod noong nakaraang taon. Labinlima na ang naitalang patay sa sakit sa taong ito.

Ang mga bayan ng Kalibo, Balete at Banga ay nakapagtala ng may pinakamataas na kaso ng dengue. Kapansin-pansin na sa mga nakalipas na linggo ay nakabilis ng pagtaas ng sakit sa buong lalawigan.

Samantala, napagkasunduan sa pagpupulong ng task force na isang sabay-sabay na paglilinis ang gagawin ng mga munisipalidad tuwing Biyernes, alas-3:00 hanggang alas-5:00 ng hapon at tuwing Sabado, alas-7:00 hanggang alas-9:00 ng umaga, sa apat na magkakasunod na linggo.

Nakatakda namang sumailalim sa Memorandum of Agreement ang gobyerno probinsiyal sa tatlong pribadong ospital sa Aklan para i-admit ang mga dengue patient na hindi kayang mai-admit sa mga pampublikong ospital dito sa bayan ng Kalibo.

Ang mga pribadong ospital ay popondohan ng gobyerno para sagutin ang gastusin ng mga pasyente.##

KNOW: History of 'Tinuom ni Aewag' Festival in Madalag

'Tinuom'

The local word “Tinuom” describes a local highland dwellers recipe with native chicken as original ingredients. Other foodstuff such as fish, meat, and vegetables may be cooked this way. “Tinuom” is a way of cooking where the ingredients are wrapped in a leaf. Preferably banana leaf. The wrapper mix is cooked over boiling water or grill. The other basic ingredients of this dish includes salt pepper, onion and lemon grass, the fluid from the chicken itself cooks all the ingredients resulting in very flavorful soup.

'Tinuom ni Aewag' Festival

Madalag is one of the seventeen towns of the Province of Aklan that do not have a festival. For years of research and planning, Madalag has chosen a festival that would truly represent, illustrate and correspond to the identity and way of life of all the Madalagnons. Tracing back the pieces of the town’s history, the town’s name itself tells something about life –“madaeag’’ which means the yellowish color of the water coming from the creek maearag connotes life that is green, serene, calm, unexploited, virgin refreshing and sustaining.

Madalag was once ruled by a Datu named Aewag and by this time, early Madalagnons have their own and unique way of cooking - tinuom. Tinuom is a simple process or method of cooking foods, no particular cookware is needed and no artificial ingredients are used that makes it healthy and economical. The mixture of all the ingredients are wrapped in banana leaves and securely tied. It looks like a pouch when both ends of the leaves are tied together. The wrapped mixtures of ingredients are put on top of a flaming and glowing charcoal and it takes some time to cook.

Usually, Tinuom is made of native chicken locally called Tinuom nga manok but many other kind of fish, meat, vegetables and other ingredients may be cooked this way such as mushroom, ueang, dueupingan, kaeopdop, etc.

Spices are usually simple but abundant in town- aeabihig leaves, Lemon grass (tangead) and salt. A very minimal amount of water is added to the ingredients and the natural broth coming from it slowly cooks it, making the food unique and of delicious taste.

The launching of the Tinuom ni Aewag Festival of Madalag depicts the true nature of the town and of its people’s history and aspirations. The simplicity of this dish represents and reflects the lives of most Madalagnons – quite. Calm and uncomplicated yet full of faith, hope and love. It also signifies survival, unity, sincerity and religiosity – distinct marks in the timeline of Madalag’s history.

As we launch our Tinuom ni Aewag Festival, there is a high expectation that this will put our humble town in the map and do its share in contributing progress in the province, region and in the whole country. There is more to Madalag than its name. There is more to discover and unfold with the Inapo ni Aewag. Just like the tinuom, it is simple to look at, but full of surprises when opened and finally tasted.

3 motorsiko nadisgrasya sa karerahan sa Numancia, 2 sugatan

NUMANCIA, AKLAN - Nadisgrasya ang tatlong motorsiklo sa kahabaan ng national highway sa Brgy. Laguinbanwa East, Numancia matapos makipagkarerahan.

Dalawa ang nasugatan sa nasabing aksidente na kinilalang sina JR Jude Lota, 14-anyos, residente ng Brgy. Pusiw, Numancia, at Jonel Bayog, 16, residente ng Brgy. Albasan pawang mga driver ng motorsiklo.

Ayon sa paunang imbestigasyon ng Numancia PNP, nagkakarera ang tatlo Linggo ng umaga nang may lumikong van sa kanilang unahan.

Biglang nagpreno umano si Bayog dahilan para madisgrasya at matumba sa sementadong kalsada.

Nasagi naman ni Lota ang isa pang motorsiklo bago ito sumalpok sa likuran ng sinusundang van. Parehong natumba sa kalsada ang mga nasabing motorsiklo.

Agad isinugod ang mga sugatang driver sa Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital para magamot habang patuloy pang iniimbestigahan ng kapulisan ang insidente.##

17-anyos na lalaki patay sa karerahan ng motorsiklo sa Lezo

PATAY ANG isang 17-anyos na lalaki matapos madisgrasya sa menamanehong motorsiklo habang nakikipagkarera sa Brgy. Carugdog, Lezo hapon ng Linggo.

Kinilala ang lalaki na si Ericko Diaz y Galang, residente it Brgy. Agcawilan.

Sugatan naman ang kanyang angkas na si Joshua Taglay, 15, residente ng Brgy. Agcawilan sa nasabing bayan.

Ayon kay Taglay bumili umano sila ng alak sa Brgy. Carugdog nang makipagkarera sila sa mga nakasabay na motorsiklo habang papauwi.

Pagdating sa palikong bahagi ng kalsada ay naalangan umano ang driver dahil sa mabilis na patakbo dahilan para tumilapon sila sa palayan.

Parehong isinugod sa Provincial Hospital ang dalawa pero makalipas ang ilang oras ay binawian ng buhay si Diaz dahil sa malubhang sugat ng ulo.

Naka-confine naman ngayon sa Provincial Hospital si Taglay.##

Basura sa Caticlan, Malay pwedeng ipamalit ng bigas

KALIBO, AKLAN - Hinihikayat ngayon ng mga opisyal ng Barangay Caticlan sa bayan ng Malay ang kanilang nasasakupan na ipalit ng bigas ang nakolekta nilang basura.

Sa inilabas na panuntunan ng Barangay, ang isang kilo ng mga ginupit na plastic sachets o isang kilo ng mga mapapakinabangan pang mga plastic bottle ay pwedeng ipalit ng isang kilong bigas sa barangay hall.

Pero paalala ng Barangay na ang offer na ito ay para lamang sa mga taga-Caticlan at ang isang household ay maaari lamang makakuha ng limang kilong bigas bawat buwan.

Dapat din na nakagupit sa maliliit na piraso ang mga basurang plastik kagaya ng mga sachet samantalang ang mga plastic bottle naman ay malinis at maaari pang gamitin o iresiklo.

Pwedeng tanggihan ng person in-charge sa "Plastic Barter Store" ang mga basura na malalaman na kinolekta sa labas ng Brgy. Caticlan. Habang padadalhin rin ng eco-bag ang mga magpapalit ng basura para lagyan ng bigas.

Nananawagan ang Sangguniang Barangay sa mga nais suportahan ang inisyatibong ito sa pamamagitan ng pag-donate ng bigas o "any goods" sa tanggapan ni Punong Barangay Ralf Tolosa.##

Operatives arrest habal-habal driver for possession of illegal drugs

[Updated] A habal-habal driver was arrested in a successful buy-bust operation staged at around 11:00PM of July 13, 2019 in Crossing Cubay Norte, Malay, Aklan.

The suspect was identified as Christopher Benignos, 25 years old, single, a Habal-habal (single motorcycle) driver from Brgy Dumlog, Malay, Aklan.

The operatives were able to recover from the possession and control of Benignos a zip-locked plastic containing suspected marijuana leaves, seeds and stem; buy-bust money, cash and cell phone.

PRO 6 new top cop visits Aklan

Police Regional Office 6 new Regional Director, PBGEN Rene P Pamuspusan, conducted his first command visit in Aklan Police Provincial Office yesterday morning at Camp Pastor Martelino, New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan.

Pamuspusan assumed his post last June 27 after the then regional director, PBGEN John C Bulalacao has retired in service.

During the command conference, Acting Provincial Director of Aklan PPO, PCOL ESMERALDO P Osia Jr., presented the situational updates of the province.

Likewise, the new regional director gave his guidance to all Aklan PPO personnel. In his message he said that he will not tolerate any illegal or criminal activities in Western Visayas and will strictly implement internal cleansing within his ranks.

 “During my watch, it will be a zero-tolerance to all criminalities and illegal activities. Likewise, all PNP personnel who will commit unlawful actions will be justly punished or sanctioned, if evidence warrants that they truly committed the offense. We are quick in giving rewards to our personnel but also swift in giving punishments to those who will lead the wrong path. Impartial and swift justice shall always be our priority in dealing with every issue that will confront the PNP,” he quipped.

Pamuspusan also made his appeal to the men and women of Aklan PPO to give their full support and cooperation in all the endeavors, programs and projects that he is going to put into action during his term of office as the region’s top cop.### (PSSG C. Lagatic)

Dengue patient pwede nang maadmit sa mga pribadong ospital sagot ng gobyerno

Pwede nang maadmit ang mga dengue patient sa mga pribadong hospital sa Aklan na hindi kayang i-admit sa government hospital dahil sa kakulangan ng pasilidad.

Ito ay kapag nalagdaan na ang isang Memorandum of Agreement sa pagitan ng gobyerno probinsiyal ng Aklan at mga pribadong pagamutan.

Ito ang sinabi ni Dr. Cornelio Cuachon ng Provincial Health Office (PHO)-Aklan sa panayam ng Energy FM Kalibo Biyernes ng umaga. Katunayan, minamadali na aniya ang paglagda rito.

Paliwanag ng provincial health official, ang hakbang na ito ay kasunod narin ng aniya "very alarming" na bilang ng kaso ng dengue sa probinsiya at sa pagdami ng mga pasyente sa Aklan Provincial Hospital.

Sinabi niya na ang St. Gabriel Memorial Medical Center, Panay Medical Health Care, at ang Aklan Cooperative Mission Hospital ay nagpahiwatig na ng kanilang kagustuhan na makipatulungan sa gobyerno probinsiyal.

Dagdag pa ng opisyal, maglalaan umano ng pondo ang gobyerno probinsiyal sa mga ospital na ito para masagot ang pagpapagamot ng mga pasyente rito.

Samantala, humingi narin ng tulong sa Department of Health (DOH) ang probinsiya na maglaan ng karagdagang mga nurses sa probinsiya.

Nagrequest na ng mga karagdagang dengue testing kit ang PHO-Aklan sa DOH, mga karagdagang dextrose, paracetamol, at iba pang mga gamot.##
