HOW TO TURN SCARS INTO STARS: OVERCOMING THE MENTAL SIDE OF BREAST CANCER

“A guide to living positively with breast cancer”

Breast cancer is a disease that a lot of women worldwide have to deal with. The fear they feel when they hear the devastating words from the doctor or the fact that they will lose a precious body part. Battling cancer is a mental sport; long and restless nights after surgery, and of course the monthly check-ups at the hospital.

A BREAST cancer survivor of 20 years has published a book aimed at helping other women who have been diagnosed with the disease. Written by first-time author, Elma Alorro Dionela, ‘How to Turn Scars into Stars’ offers practical tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle post-diagnosis as well as focusing on the mental side of cancer and how individuals can stay positive through treatment and the healing process.

Drawing on her experience of having been diagnosed with breast cancer over 19 years ago, Elma gives a candid and moving account of her struggles to come to terms with what is typically devastating news for any woman. By sharing the fears and uncertainties she felt when she was diagnosed with cancer and how she coped with the post-treatment period, Elma aims to show how a positive attitude can help others navigate the cancer ‘journey’, and how faith and hope can “help surpass obstacles”.

The author, who holds a BSC degree in Science of Education, says her story is one of scars, tears and uncertainty, but also one of strength, perseverance and hope.

“My book is meant to empower anybody that is seeking to be motivated and inspired through my personal journey. The book will also appeal to anyone who has been diagnosed with this frightening disease and wants to learn how to stay positive from the moment they’re diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Although primarily aimed at women who have been told they have breast cancer, ‘How to Turn Scars into Stars’ will be of interest to other people who have experienced the disease, or fear developing cancer at some point in the future. The book also seeks to raise awareness more generally about breast cancer, and is for women of all ages. This compact book comprises nine clearly written and succinct chapters, each one designed to help the reader develop the tools they need for dealing with breast cancer as a patient. This includes the role self-esteem and humility has in living with cancer, and the importance of empowering oneself with knowledge and being well-informed about various treatment options. The power of having a “winning” mindset and understanding one’s emotions better, and how important it is to stay busy, healthy, and nurture friendships at all times, are also covered.

‘How to Turn Scars into Stars’ will not only inspire those affected by cancer to appreciate life more but will also demonstrate how much individuals are able to do when they find themselves in this situation.##
